283 chev what carbie ? full gas or petrol
 

hi to all , new boy on the block . I have a fully balanced 283 chev engine & powerglide and wish opinions on type of manifold & carbie I should use .I am after economy not grunt ,mainly highway cruzin .any suggestions please most welcome .........cheers les

A spread bore 600-650 cfm holley carb that bolt right on to a spread bore intake that you can probably find at a reasonable price would be my choice.

I have a spreadbore edelbrock performer rpm manifold given to me so popular opinion is to go with a holley 600 spreadbore but which one ??? or a squarebore . do they match ok ??? maybe too many cooks in kitchen . anyhow I,ll listen ...........thx to all.........les

The spreadbore intake has different size primary and secondary ports, with the secondary ports being much larger than the primary. The squarebore you refer to have all the ports the same size. A spreadbore carb will bolt right on the intake you already have if you attach a squarebore carb to a spreadbore intake then you have to also install an adapter which could affect performance.

As far as which carb to pick, for the heck of it I went to the Holley website and used the interactive carb selector and it recommended a 390 4 barrel CFM. I used street application with vacuum secondaries on a stock engine.

It will bolt right on the spreadbore intake.

Personally I'd get a Quadrajet since you already have the manifold. Much better carb IMHO.
