AFTER replacing mechanical fuel pump- still no gas

All,
1978 Chevy C20 with 350, automatic trans. Just replaced the mechanical fuel pump, but am getting no gas at the carburetor. Lots of gas fumes, and there is pressure that I can feel with my finger after removing the fuel line at the carb. Also- when troubleshooting, I blew some air from the fuel line that connects to the fuel pump BACKWARDS into the fuel tank, just to be sure there was nothing blocking the intake. Ideas?

fuel pump

hello ,i have had bad fuel pump's right off the bat ! some time's they will not pick it up ,i take it there is gas in the tank .do you have compressed air avalible ? if so take a air blow nozzle and a rag put the nozzle into the gas fill nozzel and rap the rag around the air zozzle and the gas fill neck to seal it and gently blow air into the tank . possible bad pump or the pick up tube in th tank fuel sock on it is plugged ..

Try leaving the Gas Cap off and see if it helps...(bad cap).

BigIron lives!

Gentlemen: Thanks for the tips. I bypassed the fuel tank switch and BigIron started after about 20 seconds. I'll troubleshoot the fuel switch next, but for now she is running!

I appreciate the input!
