Yenko produced the 427 Nova in 1969 only. There were around thirty built with only seven or eight that are accounted for today. Recent auction results for these cars have well exceeded half a million dollars. These cars were described by Don Yenko in one of his last interviews as “a beast, almost lethal, a car that they should not have been produced; as they were skirting the edge of product liability when they built this car”. The Yenko Nova was not a COPO high performance 427 motor from the factory. It was built with a transplanted 427 motor as Yenko did with the 1967 and 1968 Camaros.

So, in the spirit of Don Yenko, this recreation was developed to maintain some of that “beast” power but also tame it with more modern suspension, brakes, and other components. The goal was to make it something you could hop in and take on a 1,000-mile drive like the Power Tour.

Over the last few years, the car was slowly put together by a group of friends who each owned it for a short time and continued the project. The final piece was the engine. One of the owner’s was a long time engine builder at Chet Wilson Engine Service in Wichita, KS. He ended up buying the car from his son’s friend a couple of years ago and began building a very special engine. The engine was built to rev. It has closed chamber oval port heads ported and polished. I can’t even begin to imagine the cost of this motor if they were charging a customer for it. The engine was balanced and blueprinted. Chet Wilson Engine is world famous. They have been building high performance American engines for over 50-years and are considered one of the best in the industry.

Some highlights of the build components include:

Custom 454 built by Chet Wilson with over 500hp.
M21 Wide Ratio 4 speed Manual Gearbox
12 Bolt Rear End with 3.08 Freeway gearing (so you can actually drive her places.)
Hotchkiss Suspension with traction bars
Steel Wheels with Poverty Hub Caps and BFG T/As f
Vintage Air System that Blows Ice Cold
Upgraded GM Disc Brakes all the way around

This Yenko Nova is a fantastic driver. If you like to go on long cruises with your car club or simply hang out at your local car show, this example can do it all.

The body is in very nice condition and is straight with a decent paint job. There are no signs of accidents or rust. The windshield has a small chip on the driver’s side. The interior looks great. There are no tears or cracks on the seats. The carpet is fresh and the dash is new. All the gauges seem to work properly except for the gas gauge and the clock. I would classify this car as a nice driver cosmetically with a top-notch drivetrain.

The cowl tag for the original car for this project is decoded as follows:

71 = year built
1 = Chevrolet
14 = Nova V8
27 = 2-Door Sedan
WRN = Willow Run, Michigan
134,128 = Sequence Number

750 = Black Cloth Bench
62 = Burnt Orange
B = Black Vinyl Roof
04B = Built 2nd Week of April
