Question regarding the transmission in a 1990-1993 Chevy s10.
 

Greetings everybody,

One of my parents close friend is willing to sell his early 90's Chevy s10(parents can't remember the year of it) I'm thinking about buying how ever I have some questions.

When it comes to anything mechanically I do not know anything about never had that father figure in my life or anyone besides my brother and hes down in florida.

My step-dad walked down to see it and talk to his friend about it. It started up but his friend says it wont shift into 3rd or higher and rough shifting into 1st and second. It's a manual transmission fyi.

I don't know anything about the vehicle other then the make and possible year and that it also has a new clutch in it.

I was wanting your opinions to see if it was worth buying and how easy of a fix or hard of a fix for it. My brother says it might need a new tranny and i could probably find one for around 300$ how ever i have no clue how to replace a tranny so should i just save my money and look around(the truck is only 250$.) or buy it and use it as a learning experience so i can learn to work on vehicles and vehicle to get to a job and back home?
