1997 silverado battery drain????

l have a 1997 silverado 5.7, 2wd. when i turn off the ignition the shift indicator light remains on. if i turn the key to accessory the light goes out but the radio will not come on. if i leave it in accessory over night the truck will start fine. if i turn off the ignition and remove the key (shift light on) the battery will not start the truck the next morning... any ideas??? tired of boost box starts!!!

I would probably pull fuses one at a time, see if I could kill the lite. Then at least you could lock the ignition switch. I realize that isn't a fix. I don't have a good enough wiring diagram to track the circuit.

Is that lite controlled by the headlamp switch, or ignition switch?

it is controlled with the igniton switch. a man where we camp had the same truck. i got in his and when you turn off the ignition switch the light goes out. if you turn it to accessory the radio would play and the shift light remained off. at another forum sight a guy suggested a bad circuit board behind the instument cluster. anyone know about that?? thanks for the reply.

If it is ignition feed on that circuit, then that circuit shouldn't be hot unless the key is on. Find the fuse for that circuit, remove the fuse, use a testlite on the fuse terminals, neither terminal should be hot with the key off. While I don't have a wiring diagram on that circuit, ignition feed comes from the ignition switch. At least that is the way I see it.

The lock cylinder (where you insert the key), when it's turned, moves a slideon the ignition switch that lines up conductors inside the swith to control power and starting. If you remove the trim cover on the upper part of the steering wheel column, you will be able to see how this works. When the ignition switch goes bad, or its parts get loose and out of line, oronly some of the conductors move to the proper places, it can do some strange things. I think this would be the first place to check for odd happenings that you describe.

See if this picture helps. 2 is the lock module and 3 is the ignition and key alarm switch module.
