1998 3500 454 help needed please

Hello everyone, I have a puzzle for you that has me stumped.
I have 1998 1TON crew cab with the 454 original motor that has 214,000 miles. The problem is my son was driving it to work about 6 miles from the house it died on him. He was able to start it again and get it to a parking lot and died again on him. I my self was able to get it started seemed to sound ok as long as I was on the gas. The truck would not idle, when I tired it died and was not able to get it started again. I have checked the battery and changed the plugs. I have power and fuel to the engine. Compression is low when we checked it. Checked the timing chain its got ware but is on and has not jumped. Has anyone had something like this happen to them?
Thanks

If compression is low check your oil level, look at your driveway or at engine for oil, could be a sign of a bad gasket.

Check your distributor cap.Something inside might be loose and vibrated off. It might be misfiring so bad it messing up your compression. Also if it is out of time it would not start or if it did, it would idle rough if at all.

Thanks for the comment. Engine oil is good and no leaks.

How did you check for low compression? Did you check each cylinder?

Possible

I had a very similar problem as this in my 99 3500, started out as a distributor gear that lost a tooth and quickly developed to a distributor gear with no teeth. Good luck.

Yes each cylinder was checked had a low of 40 on #5 to a high of 75 on #4 and #7.
