91 tranny issues

my 700r4 is now officially shot....... I was wondering if a tranny form a 1986 454 would work on my 5.7L 350

maxxman04 April 2nd, 2010 7:21 PM

it'll bolt on. it probably won't be a 700r4, it'll be th400 more than likely. if your 91 is 4wd, then the trans off 454 must be 4wd as well, 2wd must be 2wd.

efxtruck April 2nd, 2010 7:30 PM

Yeah they r both 4wd. Is the th400 a stronger tranny??

maxxman04 April 2nd, 2010 7:59 PM

a little bit, but it's also a power eater. the 400 is only a three speed, no 4th gear o/d. if you want strength over some economy, 400 will do.

I was told that it has o/d on the 454 tranny its from a 86 surburban so it should be a TBI system and Ive heard that some of them came with a 700r4..

Im looking for anything that will work really my truck has been parked for a while now I thought it was the rear end gears so I got them and they are in really nice shape and while i was changing them I found out it was the tranny.

it is certainly possible that it's a 700r4. if it is, it's the same as the 91 700r4. gm's bolt pattern is the same on all v8's.

efxtruck April 2nd, 2010 8:19 PM

well fingers crossed lol r the bolt patters the same for the big blocks and the small blocks

nauticstar87 April 3rd, 2010 4:29 PM

The bolt patterns are teh same for BBCs, and SBCs.

is it possible to use a 700r4 from a blazer in a 1500???? Im thinking so but I'm not to sure.

or swap a t56 in it! heavy duty trans with 6 gears! unless ur not into the manual trans!
