94 silverado fuel issue

I have a 94 5.7L C1500. When filling the fuel tank it pegs out well beyond full. Recently it started only taking 18 gallons to fill from about 1/4 tank. Now I do have the 34 gallon tank so this has me a bit concerned that either the float sensor is bad. Is there a way that I can test this or would I just be better off changing the float out altogether? As a add-on to this, if I do change ot the float would I be able to throw a more modern fuel sensor into the tank or would it have to be a entirely new tank as well?

Why not put in a new assembly for that truck? You can't just put any unit in there. It has to be matched to the gauge as well as the tank or will not read correctly.

You can get another sending unit that goes in the tank and it should be good to go. While you are at it you might as well replace the fuel pump that way you never have to pull the tank any more.

Or live with the way the gauge acts and refill accordingly.
