hey guys,

so i just picked up a set of 33 inch goodyears tires with 3k miles on them on mint stock 98 silverado rims. great deal at 700, where the tires are over 1000 new!

i go home and throw them on but then realize that the inside of the rims want to hit my calipers (the 98 had rear drums....)

i am wondering if anybody has done this before and how they made it work...

so the rear wheels will not even go on... they hit the calipers.... i am thinking a wheel space might do it?? grind the caliper down a bit? both?? heres some pics.... you can see that the rims is close to flush on the hub, and also, the inside of the rim tapers inward



and the fronts bolted on no problem, but once i drove i realized that they were rubbing the calipers as well.... not as bad however. the calipers just wanted to scrape a circle around the rim. i let them assuming it would go away. i havent driven very far yet, but they are quieter already. good idea? bad idea?

Grind the tops of the calipers down just a bit and they'll fit. On a 99 you're suppose to use a 16"+ wheel and in 98 I believe they still came with 15s stock

are you sure? that would be awesome. i will try it tonight. the 98 rims are 16's..... atleast the tires say so: 185/75R16

the inside of the rim is 15 inches whereas my stock 99 rims were 15.5
the rim also tapers in a bit. im going to try grinding this stuff today or tomorrow hopefully and ill post an update.

i picked up some 1/4" wheel spacers yesterday. ill be trying them as soon as i get some time...

'98s came with 16" wheels.

ya, both sets are 16's. its just that the inside diameter of the 98 rims are smaller by like half an inch, then they taper in a little bit more after that. planning to try the spacers and/or grinding tonight.

yikes! i had to grind down so much.... it took me 3 hours each.... granted, i was watching the celtics one night while doing it and the bruins the next night..... and was clogging grinding wheels with aluminum. i got them on though regardless and am a happy guy.... with a sore back from to much sitting on milk crates for so long

only park over the line because our work parking lot is always off like that lol. finally got them on. the caps from the 98 dont fit over my studs and lug nuts though. the 99 caps do but look a little weird because they dont sit right, but ill survive.

So i have been surfing the internet in search of some help. Im trying to put the stock 16in rims from a 97 silverado onto my 01 (Disks front and back). I saw your post and you had talked about 1/4 spacers. I was wondering if you tried the spacers at all and if they worked or why they didnt work? Any help would be much appreciated.

i tried a small spacer, maybe 1/4", and the wheel was still going to hit the caliper. the caliper was just a tiny bit too wide for the 98 wheels. maybe if your calipers are a lower profile you wont have a problem. mine arent stock so im not sure if stock is slimmer or not. grinding the calipers is probably the best way to go if you can do it. i still havent had an issue.
