burning oil

as long as iv had my truck it has never burned alot of oil but recently my friend stuck his finger in my exhaust tip and his finger was black. im not sure but i was told that means my truck is burning alot of oil. where should i start looking or how can i fix this? i have no idea where to start looking for the cause. recently i put a volant and a new exhaust on (julyish). could the residue be from the new exhaust?

you're ok. Black smoke is rich fuel. If your friend is wiping the pipe, thats soot. If you notice blue smoke, that is oil.

If the truck has a pre-emissions diesel engine, it is normal to find some soot in the tailpipe. If you have a DPF on the truck, you should not notice any soot.

I asked about soot in my tailpipe on my 2011, and the dealer mechanic ask if I had a check engine light on. He then showed me another same year truck and it also had the soot. He commented this is a normal look with this model.

I think that it's burning rich but he says that he can not do anything that will help correct this condition.

I ask about doing some tuning with the computer and he says that it would most likely run different at some speeds or rpms. (Not run good)

Already checked on this condition.

:)
