I've done it both ways on '88 Silverado short bed. Unless you like lying on your back wrestling the fuel tank, pull the bed off. I did use a motorcycle jack when I took the tank off. It was a "little" easier to lower it down. Still think, bed off is the way to go. Hope this helps.

for me it depends on how much fuel is in the gas tank, if its full pull the bed off, if its bout a 1/4 or under, remove the tank. if you pull the bed off dont forget to unplug the lights, I forgot. caused more work.

Pull the bed off, and yes, unplug the lights. I had a total of 8 bolts. Get a couple buddies to help as the bed is heavy. I lifted and moved my bed back maybe two feet, and the pump is right there with nothing in your way.

Good luck

Pull the bed back... I just did my fuel pump tonight... Take the 8 bolts out, disconnect the tail light wiring from the harness connectors, a couple of ground wires mounted to the frame, the screws that hold the filler neck to the side of the bed, and move back enough to get to the top of the tank...hope this helps...
