Clunking noise in rear suspension
I figured Id post this to see if anyone has any ideas why this is happening. If I go over a speed bump at a normal speed I hear a slap or clunk in the rear suspension someware. It sounds exactly like 2 leaf springs slapping together but I cant find anything loose or obvious. It sounds alot like that front tire control arm clunk most all new Chevys have. Any Ideas?

2wd or 4wd? Possibly a U-Joint, or if it is 2wd maybe a carrier bearing?

2wd, carrier bearing? Doesnt sound fun to replace.

Simple, two bolts for the carrier bearing and remove the four bolts for the rear ujoint, that will allow you to pull the driveshaft out and the pull out the carrier bearing.

Another good way to get a closer look at what is making that noise is have two or three guys stand on the rear bumper while you lean down next to the truck, have them bounce the rear of the truck and listen to where that noise is coming from, that should help you narrow it down a little closer.

Thanks for the tip, Ill get my umpa loompas out and try it.;) I have thought about my bro in law driving it with me leaning over the bed looking at it , but that sounds unsafe.

Those rear leaf springs are doing the job they're designed to do, and I may sound like a doof here,(so what's new?) but it's probably your springs slapping. They do have shackles and pads for springs to restrain movement(Bad idea?) and absorb the "slap" sound. But it's such a hassle.
Dude, TURN UP THE RADIO!! |
lol, I took some pics, and the leaf springs have pads, I am at the lake right now, I will post them when I get home. My carrier bearing does have some play in it, I will explain later, time to hit the water:D

i think it may be a u joint i found my truck was doin that and thought the same problem but then it got worse and that was the prob so check that out if u get a chance

Ok, pic one, I take it this is my carrier bearing? The rubber grommet has about 1/4 to 1/2 of play in the metal housing, the bearing seems fine. The u-joints are tight with no play at all.
