Diagnosing a transmission issue

'92 K1500. Automatic transmission.

The past two weeks, harder to get into 3rd. Finally yesterday it refuses to go. Engine keeps revving in 2nd and gear doesn't shift.

I suspect that I need to rebuild the transmission, but is there something I should rule out first, before going to that trouble?

Pull the tranny dipstick. If that 3rd clutch is fried, the oil will be brown and have a "clutchy" smell to it.

If the oil is nice, pink and does not stink, think back when was the last time you changed the fuel filter?

The oil was brown, but it had been in there for who-knows-how-long (a '92 truck) so I don't know if it means anything?

I believe I had the fuel filter changed a couple years back.
