try flushing the heater core and radiator also like the other guys did, um the grayish gunk sounds like water is getting into the block... head gasket leak maybe??? i dont know

2005 silverado 5.3 2 wheel dr. changed thermostat & water pump checked thermostat
in boiling water and it opened still gets hot. hose on top does not get hot. fans work good heater hoses get warm
