Default High idle speed.

Hi I am new to the forum. I am having a high idle speed problem with my 1986 k10. After the truck warms up it will not kick down out of high idle. If I reach under the air cleaner and move the linkage it will then kick down to normal idle. As soon as I put it in drive then back to park the idle is up high again.

Like I said it is a 1986 k10, it has the 305 high comp H code engine and a Rochester quadrajet carb. The carb number is 1708522226.

Any help or suggestions would welcome.

Kick down linkage on the carb/high idle cam is the issue. Get a kit, AND adjust the linkage for all on the carb.

Well, Since you aren't learned on carb overhaul (don't take that to heart, please) the fast idle cam on the passenger side of the carb, has an issue with after the hot air or electric choke allows the choke plate to open, in your case as I read it, hot air,. There is an eccentric on the linkage that contols the choke plate that is binding, sticking or whatever. The kit I was refering too is a carb rebuild kit. Since you posted the quadrajet carb number, my suggestion is to have it rekitted, and the linkages reset.

Simple procedure, back the choke off.

I'll check on that. It was doing fine and recently just started staying at excessively high idle. The primaries are partially open and the secondaries are closed. Diesels when it's shut off. Before the high idle issue started, it was loading up at extended red lights. But otherwise, it runs fine when you're rolling down the road.....

The dieseling and high idle are the result of that fast idle cam being held on by the choke coil, as well as loading up at stops.

Rotate that choke cover back and your troubles will go away.

Just trying to help you repair this thing without going thru a bunch of needless expense.
