"What is a ballast?
In a fluorescent lighting system, the ballast regulates the current to the lamps and provides sufficient voltage to start the lamps. Without a ballast to limit its current, a fluorescent lamp connected directly to a high voltage power source would rapidly and uncontrollably increase its current draw. Within a second the lamp would overheat and burn out. During lamp starting, the ballast must briefly supply high voltage to establish an arc between the two lamp electrodes. Once the arc is established, the ballast quickly reduces the voltage and regulates the electric current to produce a steady light output."

I think the rest is just direct snap in. Looks like everything attaches to the old wiring.

they do need to be replace, but i'm not sure how long they last.
I believe they are only illegal if the color is too purple or worse. White with a hint of blue is ok.

The site says the bulbs last an avg of 5,000 hrs, and the ballasts last an average of 10,000. Thats a good life to me for the price. Theres nothing about "off road " use only but california is pretty strict about those purdy colored bulbs, so I am not sure about the illegal thing.

They are not strictly street legal in low beams, but it only takes about 5 minutes to unhook the ballast and stick a regular bulb in prior to inspection.

Yea, Id use them for my brights, My stock low beams are bright enough, they already **** off people in drive thru's( i usually shut them off @ Drive thru's) but stopped at a traffic light sometimes they beam the driver in the face right off the cars mirror in front of me. Id like these HID's for my drives thu the winedy mountain roads. lol, I like to light the whole canyon up
without all the crazy looking spotlights on the roof

Do they have a warmup time? or are they instantly at thier brightest when you turn them on? I just know some ballast applications have a warm up time.

right off he bat they are as bright as my silver stars, i'm experiencing a 15 second warm up time to full brightness.
Now i just need to get a set for my fog lights.
