Hello,
I have a 1996 Chevrolet 1500. It is a 4 wheel drive with ABS brakes. It has what could best be described as “mushy” brakes. I have heard that the 1996-1997 trucks were notorious for this. The brake pads/shoes on the truck are good. I’ve bled the brakes and checked all the lines for leaks. I’m wondering if anybody out there has experienced the same problem and what they have done to combat it? Any help is appreciated.

Are the brake lines rusted/crusty? There is some degree of expansion with old lines. I noticed a firmer pedal feel when I replaced the whole rear line on my '89. I would also replace the front hoses if they are original. Old hoses expand and swell under pressure. Braided stainless hoses are a cheap upgrade and will provide a firmer pedal feel over new rubber because they don't expand at all under pressure.

You should also perform an automated ABS power bleed with a scan tool that is capable of it.
