Default Reverse Lights not working

What are the first places I should check to see why my reverse lights don't work on my 88 Silverado. I have checked the fuse panel under the dash and all looks good there. I have pulled the lense cover and bulb looks good. The lights have never worked on this truck since I bought it 9 years ago. Don't drive it much at night so haven't worried about it much, but I want to get them fixed. Is there a spot on the trans that needs to be checked?

on a stick shift, there is a backup switch on trans, usually drivers side at tail end of trans. on an automatic, the switch is at base of steering column, not a typical looking switch. here are a couple generic pics. the first is a fairly typical in trans switch, the second is steering column mounted.

When you say the lights have never worked I woud make sure the bed is grounded to the frame. Add a ground wire if in doubt.

If fuse is good, and bulbs are good. I'd suggest take the bulbs out of the socket, and check for corrosion.

wouldn't that not let any of the lights work if the ground was broke and not just the reverse lights?
