ring and pinion
I have bought a 99 silverado. The 4 wheel drive doesnt work. When you put it in 4 wheel you hear and feel it go into gear but the rear end pushes the front end. I have been told that the rear end gear is different than the front. Can anyone tell me what is the factory gear for this truck. I t is a 10 bolt 5.3 liter. Or tell me where i can find the info. Or if anybody has anyother info on this problem. thanks

You can put the car up in the air with the trans in neutral. Put a marking on 1 spot on the input yolk for the rear differential and then a mark on the tire. Count how many times the pinion yolk rotates for 1 revolution for the tire. Same for the front differential. On the passenger side axle tube, there is a casting number that you can decode your rear axle ratio.

Casshern,
On the inside of the glove box there is a list of codes. If you take them to your nearest dealer they can tell you what gears the vehicle came with from the factory.
Good Luck , Dondobe
