Torsion Bar Question
 

I'm 15 and just got my first truck ('95 z71) and haven't done anything to it yet, but wanted to level it out first so I wanted to tighten up the torsion bars. I'm not expert when it comes to trucks, but I do have a good bit of experience of working on fourwheelers, motorcycles, etc. So what I was wondering is should I take it to a friend of mines who knows a good bit about this sort of thing and has done it before, or should I just try it? Exactly what are the risks involved, cv joint angles, things like that. Also any general tips for doing it would be great. Thanks for any help in advance.

Jack the front end off the ground and turn 2 bolts that all there is to it. but make sure that you get an alignment afterwards. They are located if you look at the lower control arm you will see the torsion bar coming out of it and going back towards the back of the truck and they will go into a crossmember and there will be 2 bolts one for each.

Thanks alot man. How will I know when the torsion bars are maxed out? Will the bolt just not go any further or about how many full turns do you think will get me about 1.5"s? Also, should I use a torque wrench, or does it matter.

Does not matter what you use. There really is not a certain # of turns that get you a certian height. Just do a couple of turns sit it back on the ground see where it is at and go from there. You might not have to turn them the same amount.

I suggest that when you tighten up the torsion bars you make sure that the upper control arms still have about 1/2" clearence before they hit the lower bump stops. If not they will thump every time you hit a little bump.

i think you should go out and buy the leveling kit for it its just torsion bar keys and it will level the front end out without possilby screwing up your alignment.

Thanks for the tip mudmaniac. and brs, like i said im 15, so money isn't real easy to come by, and im just gonna get a tune up next week, and ill get an alignment then.
