Tranny Problem??

I was driving just 2 days ago and crouz'in at 70km/h and i herd a little "click" and drive just turned into netual? tryed it from a dead start and it still doesnt work? i've checked linkage and it seems to all work? could it be anything else rather than a tranny? because a trannys going to be around 3000 or more. and the truck is worth 4500

Oil in tranny is good.

any help would be awsome

year of rig? also, is it 4wd? if so, check to make sure transfer case is still in gear

schickj March 16th, 2010 9:33 AM

sorry, its a 2001 chevy Silverado 1500 2wd. very plain truck

maxxman04 March 16th, 2010 9:36 AM

ok, do you have any other gears? also look under truck to make sure you didn't snap a u joint.

schickj March 16th, 2010 10:20 AM

I have Park, Reverse, Netual. The truck has 210,000km or 130000miles. Wouldn't be a joint since i have reverse. i was thinking it may be the little computer that the linkage conects to? but i have done some serching and suposably if that goes in turns on limp mode where 1 and 2 gear work?.

maxxman04 March 16th, 2010 10:26 AM

that's correct. sounds like you lost the tranny. might be able to find a used replacement pretty cheap. or unfortunately, rebuild yours.

schickj March 16th, 2010 10:27 AM

But there is no metal in the oil?

maxxman04 March 16th, 2010 10:34 AM

that's not always the only sign of failure. it sounds like the forward sprague (gear) may have broke, that would have been the sound you heard.

schickj March 16th, 2010 10:43 AM

What would cause that to break? Overworking the tranny? It was doing nothing when it broke but before that the truck was used for towing a several heavy loads. for long distances.

maxxman04 March 16th, 2010 10:48 AM

towing can be hard on tranny, especially heavier loads over long distances. the fluid could overheat many times and without a trans temp gauge, you'd never really know. two suggestions for you if you fix this rig and keep towing. 1. install a good trans temp gauge. 2. install a good heavy duty trans fluid cooler. the stock one is not really meant to keep fluid cool under heavy load.
