Default Water drain plugs in 4.8L block

Has anyone ever pulled the water drain plugs out of the sides of a 4.8L? I want to completely drain and refill my trucks cooling system and the repair manual I have says to drain the radiator then pull both plugs out of the block to finish draining...

I have found both plugs, they appear to be brass and takes an allen head to remove them. I tried turning one but it's awfully tight and in fear of stripping it I thought I'd ask here. Reason I want to completely drain it is I've been leaking a little coolant and when it gets low I've been topping off with the Prestone stuff that mixes with all colors of antifreeze. And while all the water is out would be a good time to replace the water pump gasket thats leaking. Thanks in advance.
