Question Weird thing happens when it's cold

A friend of mine, has a 2004 Silverado. He's had no issues with it, till this winter, when it gets down to zero, his gauge cluster quits working. The panel lights up, and the only thing that works, is the digital odometer. Otherwise the gauges like speedo, tach, oil, water, volt, and any other gauge or light, does not work.
When it warms up, they work properly.
Anyone have an idea as to what it could be?
Appreciate any ideas.

I have had to have the gauge cluster in both my personal 04 1500 and my 04 2500 work truck. I do believe its a known chevy problem and think there was a recall out for them at some point.

The stepper motors in the gauge cluster are defective. You can send your cluster out for repair or do it yourself if you can solder. You can buy the 6 stepper motors on Ebay for around $25
