03 silverado 2500hd 6.0 knock sensor question
 

Hey guys long time,

Im getting the knock sensor code low input bank 2, I can tell my timing of out of whack when climbing a hill. I hear its rare for the actual knock sensor(s) to go bad and its usually a wiring or PCM problem.

I just want to hear if anyone has had issues like this and what solutions are possible before I take the intake manifold off to check the wiring.

If someone knows the output voltage from the PCM or ECM(whichever it is) to the knock sensor(s) that would be awesome.

Definitely not rare for the actual sensor to go out...I've read that it's actually a common problem with these trucks and have replaced 4 of them myself on 3 different trucks with 01-05 year models. Just take the intake manifold off an replace the sensor and then out rtv around it so water doesn't get back in there and destroy it gain

Big problem with water intruision around knock sensor causing failure. There is a TSB for building a water damn around it.

Thanks guys! I wasnt aware that they can commonly go out, just something I read on some random site. I will go ahead and get the manifold gasket and make some time to tear into it. Ill post pics & what I find as I go.

Few questions?

1. Water from maybe cleaning the engine? thats when it started, after I cleaned & hosed off the motor. Ive done that several times in the past as well.

2. Whats the purpose of that sponge pad under the intake manifold?

3. Is bank 2 the front sensor or the rear?

Leaks in from hood seal. Happens to trucks that no one ever washes under hood.

lol, Well that makes me feel a little bettter, at least I didnt cause it.

Just wanted to follow up on this, its repaired, it turned out it was a broken signal wire under the intake manifold, it almost looked like it was pulled and ripped off, possible. MDTahoe was right, water has been in there and rusting away at the wiring & connections, soldered & put heat shrink the broken wire cleaned it all out and it cleared the code automatically after a drive cycle.

I didnt get pics, sorry, was all caught up in the moment, then it was done.

to mike sigmond: when your check engine light was on and the computer said the knock sensor was bad, did you have any problems with your turn signals because of the wiring? My light is reading the sensor is bad, but when i hit the turn signal left, it causes all of my rear lights to flash, as if i hit my 4way hazards. and when i hit my brake the even the in dash signal freezes and all my lights stop working.

anybody have any advice before i tear into it too much?

Uhh, no. Sounds like you got a corrupted computer or some wiring or curcuit board that is corroded/damaged. Codes dont necessarly mean thats the part thats bad, codes show where the readings are out of range. My case was a simple broken wire that connected to the sensor.
