Are you stating you have an INCH of play at the center of the steering column?(Towards and away from the dash?)

This would not be considered normal, and it sounds like the shaft nut attaching your steering wheel is very loose. In that case, the clunking sound is just a byproduct of a very dangerous condition. See your dealer pronto.

welcome to the forum. welcome to the world of GM cars.

MINE HAS SAME!!! it's not ISS. btw, if you have replaced OEM ISS with exactly same designed, you wasted money twice. It's crappy design and clunck comes back in about 4-5 mths, I KNOW. replace with NAPA one.
but, ISS cluck is produced by itself, when you take off or brake down sharply. thud in steering column.

what you have, buddy, is what I have - grab steering wheel and shake it, and it rattles like crazy and moves. yes, indeed.

so, like I said - get over with and pay no attention. louder music helps. it's their famous quality.

The key to fixing this is actually breaking it, you remove the bottom bolt and then force the shaft up and down then reinstall it, most of the time that fixes it. If not then try this.
