catalytic converter replacement

I have a code for a bad catalytic converter in my '98 k1500 with 4.3 and I'm looking to replace the cat and install a cat-back Gibson split dual exhaust to get it running right and sounding good.. I've never replaced exhaust components before and I have found several catalytic converters... some universal that you weld in place and some direct-fit. The universal ones appear to be significantly cheaper and the direct fit i found were around $220. I was curious which route would be best. Basically I want to know if I'm paying more for the direct fit because it performs better or if I'm paying more because it's already fabricated and requires no welding or cutting. The welding is no problem and wouldn't cost me a thing. Which route do I go?

RE: catalytic converter replacement

I replaced on last year. I went for the direct fit Dynomax. Took a week to get it. It didn't fit properly. Couldn't get it to seal up to the exhaust manifold because the angle was slightly off. Ended up taking it to a muffler shop and they chopped it up and rewelded it. Now it looks shoddy.

I recommend going for the universal fit. I don't think there is any effect on performance and it is much less expensive. You won't have to wait either. Most muffler shops keep them in stock.

RE: catalytic converter replacement

thanks! i talked to a couple people about it today, too. they all tell me the direct fit is only more expensive because of the "convenience" of direct fit... yeah i'll definitely be buying a universal fit cat. thanks
