But wouldn't piston slap be all the time or pretty frequent? Mine just does it for 15-20 second on cold mornings and thats it.

well guys to be honest, im only 18, and i have only worked in a auto parts store for 8 months, but i got a 02 z71 5.3 vortec with 70,000 miles, and in the morning it knocks for 15-30 secs. ive shown it to my mechanic, ive taken it in to the Gmc place, and ive taken it to two chevy dealers in shreveport, and bossier. All come up with one answer. its chevys engine. its the lifters. its nothing wrong, its how they are all built, they all do it sooner or later, its nothing to worry about as i was told, even though it sounds scary. like malibumaxx said its the lifters, and even if you replace them, soon you'lll hear the same thing again.
though i'd share.
oh and is it normal to get 12 mpg with my truck. only thing ive changed is 285/75/16. got a grill guard, and a tool box.

I have a 92 pick up 4X4 with 106000 miles, bought it new. no noise at all. I switched to shell rotella oil a few years back. They have changed the additives in all the other oils. Now there is an increase in the lobe wear on flat tappet cams. If the wear is increased there so will other areas. They dropped the additives because of the 100,000 warrenty on the catalic cnoverter. The burning oil would fowl them out. I am still running the orginal converter and I get 18 to 20 MPG on the highway with 373 gears. my neighbor has a 2007 4X4 pickup and gets 13 MPH. I am retired from the GM tech center and after reading some of these posts I just might buy a TUNDRA. By the way I change the oil every 4000 to 5000 miles and tow a 30 foot 5th wheel trailer from MI toFL and back and still use no oil in 5000 miles. What a shame GM has ruined the small block. I am getting to the point of not saying I am a retired GM

Dennis,
Kind of interesting to hear a retired GM worker claim that "it's a shame GM ruined the small block".

Curious what did on the Warren GMTC campus for 40 years? I’d certainly never be embarrassed to tell anyone that I worked for GM.

2006 silverado tick

Here's the noise my truck makes. Generally, the loud ticking sound that happens when the throttle is released only happens for the first 10 minutes or so after starting. But the constant quiet tick is always. The video is just to depict the sound.

2006 Silverado 1500 LS 4WD 120,xxx miles.

Cold start ticking

I have a 2001 suburban and i also get the cold start ticking for 30 seconds and it fades away.. its got 217000 on it.. it's been doing it for years..but i have right under 40 psi oil pressure at start up. So im thinking good oil pressure..dont worry about it..now if your not getting oil pressure for 30 seconds at start up..it won't be long before you have big trouble lol
