Default oil change

Does my 2012 silverado tell me when to change oil or do I go by the percentage? (I have 11k miles on mine) and I have about 36% on the oil thing...

I just do mine every 3,000 to 3,500 miles -- and I know that I could go a lot longer. I am "old school" on this and believe that you can never change your oil too often.

Be sure to change the filter as well -- or it will be like taking a shower and putting on dirty underwear.

If you get the "Change Engine Oil" message (at least on my truck), it has nothing to do with the 'life' left in the oil. It goes by xxxx miles from when it was last reset.

2012SilveradoMan,

With our new oil life monitoring system, it will indicate to you when to change your oil by displaying a message, oil change recommended. Just a reminder, this system does not measure oil level. So, you will need to continue to check your oil level on the dipstick. You can certainly, still monitor your mileage for your oil changes as well.

How long has it been since it was last changed?
11k is getting up there, if you are unsure, I would recommend taking it in have having the oil changed and the monitor reset...
remember to have the chassis points lubed and rotate the tires for maximum tire life...

+1, I'm with you, 5000kms for us Canucks, EHH.
In response to the OP, since you don't know when it was changed last, I'd go ahead and change it, does it look dirty?
