the service battery charging system light came on in my wife 2014 chevy malibu. can you help me understand what that means & what i need to do to fix the problem...

Have the battery and alternator checked. It might also be something as simple as a loose or corroded battery cable.

Original battery? If so, replace it. The red light is telling you there is a problem with the charging system, probably battery time.
