95 Suburban Brake lights
alright well my brake lights decided to stop working the other day. I checked my other lights and everything else was fine so i came to the conclusion that it was the brake light switch. The switch itself works but what im seeing is when the brake pedal is pressed there is too much wiggle room for the switch so the prong is never pressed into the switch itself it all just ends up moving together. I have went to junkyards and tried other switches and looked at other switches mounted under other suburbans and for whatever reason mine is just not sitting on there like the rest. Could it be possible that the master cylinder rod is worn down where the switch clips on or am i just missing something. thanks.
this is the style switch i have, when clipped on the the cylinder rod it wiggles around. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/chevrol...906a61f125.jpg |
Did you try a different switch?

yeah i have 3 switches i got from 3 different locations, they all do the same thing, when i looked at other suburbans they seem to clip on the rod tighter and took minimal effort to push in the plunger but mine just seems to be doing the opposite, i clip it on there and it all just moves together. i temporarily zip tied it to get it home without getting pulled over a million times but it quit working as soon as i pulled onto my street.

Something is definitely worn out. You will just have to find the bad part. You might try putting some shim material on the rod to take up the play, but that would only be a temporary fix if it works.

yeah i still havent found the solution but i havent had much time due to work, ive just been manually engaging my brake lights when i do have to drive it, im thinking the shaft on the brake booster is too worn out to hold the switch in place
