Power steering leak

Just bought a 2005 GMC YukonXL with 70K miles from GMC dealer. 2 weeks and the power steering gear box develops a leak. GMC dealer says -- tough!! $986 plus tax to replace.

Has anyone removed and replaced the power steering gear box? Two shops say that they will not rebuild gear box but will only replace with new. GMC shop says $986 plus tax and front end shop says $600 plus tax. I am not a mechanic, but I am mechanically inclined. It looks like it would be a doable job. GM shop manual not much help.

Thanks for looking and hope you have some suggestions.

Did you buy the vehicle under the Certified Used program? Thank you for your time.

I just replaced it on my '97 1500 burb. It was pretty easy. The hardest part was re-assembling the hoses and fittings without shredding the orings.

I got a re-man unit at Oreilly Auto Parts for $250ish.

Be sure to repalce ALL the hoses, and grease ALL the orings when you put it back together.

I was given a 100,000 power train warranty only. I do not find a "certified" vehicle warranty in my paperwork. It is just too convenient for the dealer that this "power steering leak" happened shortly after the vehicle was driven off the lot. Their quote to fix was $986 plus tax. I had it repaired at a front end shop that I have dealt with for many years with a Delco remanufactured unit. Total cost $480.00 plus tax. Says a lot for the dealer!!!
