My 95 Tahoe keeps blowing the 30 amp fuse in box #24 labeled 4WD. My transfer shifter is on the floor and whenever I change it from 2 high to 4 high or 4 low it blows the fuse and will not engage the 4 wheel drive. Any suggestions on how what's causing it and how to fix? This is my first Tahoe and first 4x4. Love the truck, just trying to make it right.

is this the GM mechanism that uses a vaccum to pull a tube to engage, that always fails from water / ice / etc?

I hope my 09 doesn't use the same thing...

google this problem, most people replace the vaccum thing I believe.

The 95 uses an electronic actuator, I would suggest looking at the wires connected to the front axle and inspecting them for a short.

crap, i was thinking the wrangler... which uses a vaccum pump thingy in the front... most off roaders replace it w/a cable...

Some of the Dodge trucks have that same set up. It's a Dana 44 thing.

I dont know where the electrical problem was. I pulled the electrical actuator off and I put a 4x4 Posi-lock cable kit on it and by passed the electrical system all together. 4x4 works fine now since the transfer case and the front hub engagement is all manual.

My best guess, though, is that the actuator was, or still is froze up from lack of use. I removed the actuator and I ran a hot wire to it and the plunger still did not protrude like it should if it were functioning properly. The cable system works just fine and I don't have to worry about that problem anymore.

Don't worry the 4wd was getting used was spinning circles in 3 foot of snow then I got stuck took a few mins to work out why I was not moving.

Then the plow came and my car is still there CRAP Plan on getting towed tomorrow.

But every time I replace the fuse and then put it 4WD the fuse just blows so I'll keep you all posted what the problem when I clean the snow out and find the wires any suggestion on what side i start digging on don't have a manual.

Start with checking the connections on the axle, they are located on the passenger side. Trace the wires back and inspect them for a short. Try unplugging the connectors and see if it still blows the fuse.
