Default Timing Cover front seal

I am trying to install a new crankshaft/timing cover front seal into a '97 4.3L V6 Vortec and the auto parts store has sold me a replacement seal that does not fit. (The seal can be put in by hand and removed without any resistance) I have gone to several different auto part stores (Auto Zone, O'Reilly's, Advance) and they all have the same after market part available. Since the timing cover is plastic is there a possibility that the cover is damaged or has expanded so the seal won't fit properly? I am trying to avoid replacing the cover if possible since the oil pan and the 4x4 all have to be dropped to install timing cover properly. Thank you for your help on this matter.

You can try using some kind of glue or sealer like JB weld to hold the seal in place.

Went to Chevy dealer and bought the OEM seal and it fit. Looks like the original parts were the answer, even though it was 4x more expensive.
