View Full Version : Juss wondering Dyno_Man 04-21-2006, 09:39 PM Juss wondering, since my 00' cavy is auto...wat would have 2 be done so I could turbo the car? Nomad76lj 04-21-2006, 10:07 PM should just be able to put one on from an after market suplier. have you done any other upgrades to the car? Dyno_Man 04-21-2006, 11:04 PM so far, I got an air intake. I juss started moddin the car. So I should juss be able to bolt on a turbo kit even wit stock internals n everything? I kno im gonna need atleast exhaust. Nomad76lj 04-21-2006, 11:07 PM i would do the exaust to but other then that normal stuff like better wires plugs all that. just with the stock motor i wouldent use alot of boost maby 5 or 6 pounds to start and see how the motor handles it. Dyno_Man 04-21-2006, 11:17 PM kool, thnx for the info. I was thinkin bout the turbo idea but its 2 much money for now, especially since I juss started modding the car. One thing that puzzles me....I kno manual cars have the flywheel, juss wonderin if autos have it 2...sorry bout the noob question but I am after all a newb to engine work. Nomad76lj 04-21-2006, 11:35 PM no ? is a dumb one all cars have a flywheel standard and auto its there to balence the motor and it is used to help start the motor. amy more ?s dont be afraid to ask. Dyno_Man 04-22-2006, 11:52 PM so basically everything that can be done 2 a stick shift car can be done to an auto? Nomad76lj 04-23-2006, 01:38 AM yup. you can do anything to your car with an auto that you could do with a stick shift. Dyno_Man 04-24-2006, 01:55 AM wat bout tranny wise? I kno stick an auto are way different but I dont really kno the specifics of each of em. Nomad76lj 04-24-2006, 11:04 AM with a stick shift when you put the car into first gear it does only that and nothing else untill u put it into 2nd. and so on. with an auto tranny when u put it into drive thats all u need to tell the car the car then changes gears by how fast or slow the car is going. also the auto uses the fluid to help change the gears and the stick can use fluid or mecanical leavers to change gears. also there are many more moving parts to an auto tranny then with a stick shift. hope this helps u a bit more. Dyno_Man 04-24-2006, 08:11 PM so wat upgrades can be done 2 an auto tranny? also, wat "mods" can I do w/o spending ne money lol...like bypassing sum sensor or sumthin. Nomad76lj 04-25-2006, 09:53 AM as for free mods nothing. they are what they are. as for the paying type you could upgrade to synthetic fluid and you can get shift kits for them. they require you to take apart the bottom of the tranny and replacing some balls and springs in there. but if your new at this its not somthing i would want to put in myself. Dyno_Man 04-25-2006, 08:49 PM ok kool. Yea im really new to modding cars...but im not new to em if u kno wat i meen. Like I kno enough to school sumbody wen think they think know it all bout certain parts lol...like those Honda ricers who think their cars can kick ass juss cuz they have intake n big-4-nuthin exhuast lol. isnt 3-4" a lil 2 big for an N/A car? n Doesnt that actually not help as much as maybe a 2-1/2"? Cuz i kno 3-4 inches is more for turbo cars...i've heard that 3-4 isnt all hat better for N/A...but I think thats juss for a 2g Eclipse. Nomad76lj 04-25-2006, 10:25 PM the biggest exaust you realy need is maby 3" but thats mostly for the sound. and my truck sounds just like that. all i had 2 do was wait for it to fall off!! Dyno_Man 04-26-2006, 11:11 AM so would 3" be ideal for power n good sound? I dont want it 2 be really loud juss noticeable u kno. Also wat exactly is a test pipe or straight pipe? I always hear bout em but idk wat they are lol. Also is it cheaper to buy a full cat-back exhuast system or buy everything piece by piece like headers, downpipe, cat converter, muffler, etc. Nomad76lj 04-26-2006, 12:33 PM 3" is what most ppl put on and depending on the type u put on as to how lowd it is. you can order a hole kit from some of th companys like borla or a few others or you can get a cat back witch is cheaper becuse u dont have to buy the catalitic converter witch is the most expencive part of the exaust. you should be able to get a good system for around a few 100$s at your local mufler place. Dyno_Man 04-26-2006, 01:15 PM so if I get an exhuast system....wat would be included n would there be ne parts that would compromise with inspection stuff....i live in texas so im not really sure if sum exhuast upgrades would mess up inspections n stuff. Nomad76lj 04-26-2006, 01:51 PM if you go with a cat back type then there should be no problems with emitions becuse your not doing anything with any of the emitions parts ( cat /o 2 senser.) or any of that stuff. you should also be alright if you put a high flow cat on it to but they can get expensive. anymore then that and i wouldent be sure. i live in canada so im not to sure on your emition regulations there. Dyno_Man 04-26-2006, 02:23 PM is it hard 2 convert auto into stick shift? I was thinkin bout that a long time ago but i kno its time n money consuming. Is it the same as owning a regular stick shift or do people have problems after the conversion? Nomad76lj 04-26-2006, 05:01 PM it would be cheaper and easyer just to sell the auto and buy a stick shift. you could convert from a stick to an auto but its almost imposible to go the other way. Dyno_Man 04-27-2006, 05:22 PM got a question, I got an A-Spec intake last riday..bolted it up n everything....where can i put the brackets to hold the intake up? cuz I juss looked into my engine bay around my intake n I dont see ne place to bolt the bracket???? Nomad76lj 04-27-2006, 06:12 PM you may just have to make somthing to bolt it to. i would almost have to see it to be able to tell you what you can and can unbolt or move to bolt up the brakets. Dyno_Man 04-27-2006, 07:31 PM yea I'll take pix of it soon. I got another question....does 95-99 cavalier have the same as 2000-2002...like exhuast set up n stuff? IM juss curious Nomad76lj 04-27-2006, 10:52 PM i would think that there wouldnt be much difrence. i would check for sure if u plan on using parts though. i know the body panals and stuff are dif. Dyno_Man 04-28-2006, 12:22 AM yea cuz I can find parts for my car cheaper if it was like 95-99 but if they wont fit then its aight...juss tryin 2 save a buck or two lol Nomad76lj 04-28-2006, 10:20 AM ya you need to save all the money you can to be able to aford to put gas in you car with the price of it now. Dyno_Man 04-28-2006, 09:41 PM ok i got another question....2day on my way home i notice my engine temperatur needle rising lil by lil every minute or so....wen I was bout 5 minutes away from home my "check gauges" light came on n I noticed that the needle was now all the way into red....I think it mite be becuz of the oil since its 100 miles b4 its gotta be changed, but wen I checked it wen i got home it was like 2 circles below full...like there are 4 lil circles from full n mine was 2 from it so I tihnk its got enough but u never kno....IM juss wondering if there is nething else 2 consider checking? It juss started doin this 2day, I dont wanna start thinking its becuz of my intake cuz then i'll be pissed lol. Nomad76lj 04-28-2006, 09:55 PM if you cheacked the oil when it was hot you wont get the right reading on the stick you have to wait for it to be cold to get the right reading. so you are probly low on oil cuse it always reads higher on the stick when its hot. as for why its running hot it my be that its low on oil or maby you moved or cut anything when you put the intake on? Dyno_Man 04-28-2006, 11:33 PM well Im not sure its the intake tho becuz I've had the intake on for an entire week as of now n it hasnt caused ne problems...so Im thinkin its the oil, either way im takin it in the shop to get the oil changed...since I got a 1-year coupon for it lol. Also, there is a light that has been going on n off while I drive....im not really sure as to wat it is 4...it looks like a tank with an arrow pointing downward...like its a low liquid level symbol but idk wat its for....wen i checked the owner's manual I thought it was for the coolant, but I already filled that up...so I have no clue wat it is....would it go off for brake fluid? power steering fluid? tranny fluid? or nething else??? Nomad76lj 04-29-2006, 12:59 AM this sounds dumb but its probly for your washer fluid. but if your taking it to the shop anyway they will check all the fluids for you so if the light is still on when you get the car back then i would check your washer fluid. Dyno_Man 04-29-2006, 01:18 AM I figured it out, my dad told me that its the water pump...thats y its heating up so quickly...now tha problem is how do I change water pumps? Is it really hard 2 or could it be done urself? Nomad76lj 04-29-2006, 08:54 AM you could do it yourself but its a real pain in the ass if you have the money i would go to thegarage and get it done. Dyno_Man 04-29-2006, 12:31 PM I juss need 2 know where its located on my engine. Nomad76lj 04-29-2006, 05:14 PM its on the drivers side under the altinator. Dyno_Man 05-02-2006, 05:11 PM ok heres teh deal, my dad n some of my friends say it could be the thermostat that is messed up...not sure if my dad changed it tho....the car stays at low temps 4 like 5 minutes then after that it starts going up quickly....so wats up wit it...also wen i turned it on 2day there was some smoke coming from the engine bay from underneath...not sure wat that was!!! Nomad76lj 05-03-2006, 01:40 AM the thermostat is easy and cheap to fix. as for the smoke i dont know about. folow the top rad hose to the motor, the part that the hose is concted to is where your thermosat is under that peice. Dyno_Man 05-05-2006, 10:45 PM the smoke was from the antifreeze that got on the engine, it wasnt the thermostat...its the water pump...so we're already fixing, juss gotta put it in n put the belt back on....god I need my car, i cant drive my dad's blazer nemore...dam gas hog!!! Ialready spent almost 80 bucks in the past week for gas on that thing lol. Dyno_Man 05-15-2006, 07:19 PM i got another question, wat exactly are underdrive pulleys? r those the pulleys that are attached to the belt? Nomad76lj 05-15-2006, 10:02 PM undredrive pullys are for your waterpump alt. powerstering and anything run from the motor they are after market pullys to replace the stock ones. they help the engine get a bit more power by spining the accereys faster. Dyno_Man 05-16-2006, 04:28 PM k thnx, now another question lol. Wat exactly is a short shifter? Also does ne1 kno where I can get automatic shift knobs...like U kno how U can buy new shift knobs for stick shifts...ne1 know where I can get 1 for automatics??? Nomad76lj 05-16-2006, 08:55 PM you can get shift knobs for an auto same place as for a stick any that i have seen for the auto look stupid. but thats my opinion. a short shifter makes the car shift quicker and gives it a bit more power when shifting but its only for stick shift cars. hope this helps. Dyno_Man 06-08-2006, 04:07 PM ok i got a question bout an intake system i bought for my uncle....yes it was ebay lol. I bought it, it came, wen I open the box i had everything but instructions n the intake pipe didnt have a hole for the o2 sensor. But it came with 2 long things of silicone tubing or w/e....my question is wat does the tubing hook up 2 n can we juss hook up the o2 sensor 2 one of the tubes...but we prolly cant cuz teh tubing is really small. So wat does it hook up 2??? Nomad76lj 06-08-2006, 07:55 PM i think the 02 senser goes into your exuast down tube from the manifold. as for the rest of the stuff i cant say cuse eavery kit is diff. Dyno_Man 06-08-2006, 08:15 PM the reason i asked was becuz on my intake, the 02 sensor goes into the hole on the intake pipe. N on my uncles, it doesnt have the little hole, its got 2 lil pipes that run off the intake pipe that hook up to the silicon tubing i guess, but we dont kno wat THAT hooks upto. |
