Default Kinda crushed valves... 2.2 ecotec

So, Ran my 02 cavalier a little too hard... I was so stupid to do that with an ecotec. My question: Can I swap out the 2.2 from a pre 97 Cavalier? From what I understand Pre 97 2.2 motors are much more reliable than whats a few years more modern. How different are the bolt patterns? What parts from either engine would match up? What suspension problems would I meet? Is it even possible? I have the time. I have a little bit of money. I just don't want to scrap the car. Are there any viable and affordable swaps? The car has a 5 speed manual transmission and id like to keep it that way. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

I hear 2003-2005 Ecotec are the most reliable engines. Why don't you upgrade to one of those?
