I bought a launch c-readerVI. Its $169 in Canada...probably much cheaper in the USA.

Its not a full function scan tool but operates all 10 modes of obdII.

reguardless of what you get; get something with theses functions:

-Displays all generic and manufacturer powertrain codes
-displays live data/datastream
-displays freeze frame failure data
-displays OBDII monitor status

Borrowed a actron code reader for obd II, went to see if there were any codes and it wont plug in. The plug on my van is square not angled sides like the obd II scanner. Looked up the vin number and it says that its a 1996, but Im starting to think that its a obd I. Ive never used a scan tool before so not for sure. If this is the case now I know why Im having trouble trying to trouble shoot this engine

To my knowledge there are no OBDII TBI engines. If you have throttle body injection then most likely you don't have OBDII

Check Ebay, they have OBD2 to OBD1 conversion cables.

should have central port injection unless you have a late production 1995.

the gm schematic for a 1996 g van with a 5.7 shows a 16 pin connector. but you are definitly describing a obdI connector

whats the 10th character of your vin? s is 1995, t is 1996.

Does it take a special scanner to read obd I or will a obd II scanner with a different cable read them
Found on this web site how to jump the connector and watch the check engine light for codes. There is nothing that shows it just flashes 12, meaning everything is okay, I know that cant be right because it knocks and has no power, do you think the computer could be bad?????

Put a timing light on it and disconnected the brown wire with black stripe which was at the distributor and it dropped from 8 degrees advance to 0 degrees advance, But when you give it gas the engine advances 4-6 degrees. Is this normal or do I have a bad distributor or timing chain
