Here is my problem, I tried ordering a trans from a rebuilder and now have the charge for it in dispute with my credit card company as nothing has shipped, and they wont answer phone or e-mail.

So I have decided to rebuild it myself. It is a 1997 Chevy express with the 4L60E trans. Does anyone have advice as to where to get the parts? And what brand of parts to use? I live in South Texas and heat is an issue. I do light towing of campers (13 foot travel trailer) and I have purchased a trans cooler to be put in. I have found videos online on how to do the rebuild, and as long as I'm careful and take pics of where things go, I am confident I can do it. I plan on getting a new converter. Are there other parts I need to be cautious of inside, other than what comes with a kit? I am wanting to get a good quality kit with the steels and clutches.

No offense. You are asking questions that lead me to suggest buy a rebuilt, or take it to a shop.

unless your prepared to purchanse the hundreds of $dollars of specialty tools needed to do this one time repair have it professionally rebuilt.

make sure the trans lines and heat exchanger/rad are flushed before the new trans goes in

Ditto. Tranny rebuild is super complex. Take it to a specialty tranny shop. Also, you might look into upgrading to the 4l80e if you are doing a swap...better for trailering....

I found a used trans for $400 and put it in. What all is involved in changing over to a 4L80E trans, computer, wiring, mounts? Van works for now, but with a used trans it's a gamble.

hope you flushed the trans lines and trans cooler in the rad or it won't even be a gamble.

I had the rad and the trans lines out of the van and completely flushed them in both directions. I also added another new cooler. It goes through the radiator then through the second cooler and back to the trans.

as long as you don't see cold weather you can run the cooler that way.

I live in South Texas, no cold weather here. So far trans seems good. Took off the pan and changed the filter, no metal in the pan, that's a good thing. It drives perfectly.
