I'm looking at buying a (well) used cargo van - something in the late 90's to early 2000's. Either a 1/2 or 3/4 ton - most likely a v8 1/2 ton since this seems to be the most common.

I'll be using the van for short trips - 4 to 8 hours from home.

Any recommendations on year models that I should skip? What kinds of things should I have my mechanic repair/replace right off the bat so I don't get stranded in the middle of BFE?

anyone have any experience on removing the rear drum on a 1997 Express 2500 van?

My 2001 Express 2500 Cargo has 509,000 miles on it. I've replaced the alternator, starter and plugs all after 300,000 miles. The engine has not been touched otherwise. It's been a jewel, except for the freak fuel pump connection at the crossmember. After 3 fuel pumps and a wiring harness, I fixed it with a 2 dollar jumper wire on the hot wire, bypassing the connector.
