Default Low Oil Pressure

1989 C 1500 350 cid, at stop lite engin pressure will drop to zero on the guage and to begin to knock, step on the gas and knocking stops but pressure will only come up to just over 15 pounds. this engin only has 110,000 miles looks good runs great. Question? Can I change the oil pump without having to lift up on the engine. This pickup is not mine it's my mother-in-laws. She is a good people, makes a kick *** dinner every Sunday, I am just trying to save her a couple bucks, so hit me back with all suggestions.

Thanks 1Gary very useful imformation, didnt know about priming the oil pump. After removing all said things the oil pan will completely drop out? If it wont I'll have park the truck near a tree to put a comealong on the engine to lift it up

If possible, take and post a picture of that assembly when you take it out. My money's on a really gunked-up intake screen and/or tube.

Pictures of the process and a little "how to" really are nice and can be a real help to the next person searching the forum for help...

When was the last time you had the oil changed/checked? Have you taken the vehicle in to be inspected for this issue?
