Default need some help with a broken timing belt??

I'm helping a buddy with a 70 impala 350 V8 replace a timing chain cause it jumped and stripped the gears on the cam gear..We got it all stripped down new double roller set in hand and ready to put back together...My question is I understand how to find TDC on #1 on the crank but how do I ensure the cam is in the right place?

Can I just line the dots on the crank gear and cam and be good to go? Or will I have to remove valve covers?

Thanks in advance for the help

Yes, thats it. here is the prodedure from the book...

Timing Chain

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

V8 Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to the Timing Cover Removal and Installation procedures in this section and remove the water pump and the timing cover.
  2. Turn the crankshaft until the mark on the camshaft sprocket aligns with the mark on the crankshaft sprocket.
  3. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolts, the camshaft sprocket, the timing chain and the crankshaft sprocket, if necessary.
NOTE: When installing the timing chain, install the sprockets with the timing marks facing each other; this position is TDC of the No. 6 cyl. (V8). To locate the TDC of the No. 1 cyl., turn the crankshaft one full revolution, the camshaft timing mark will now be at the top of the sprocket.
  4. To install, use new gaskets, sealant and reverse the removal procedures. Torque the camshaft sprocket bolts to 13–23 ft. lbs. Check and/or adjust the engine timing.
