Default 01 Blazer Speedometer pegged then let loose

<hr style="color:#000000; background-color:#000000" size="1"> Today I noticed the speedometer was pegged at 100 mph. I didnt notice it when I first used the truck till I got uptown. On my short trip to town and back it finally let loose and now when I do about 5 mph it says Im doing 10-20mph.
Im thinking it broke after being pegged.

I just recently put a new battery in it over the weekend.
Do you think that could have caused it to peg?
Also what else can I check before I make the decision that it is the cluster panel and nothing else? Been reading about using a scanner but there is no service engine light soon light on. Yet!!
So dont think anything will show up as a problem if the service light didnt pop up.....
