Default 2001 Silverado thoughts

Hello everyone, I have been looking forever for a V8 full size truck with a manual transmission and I think I may have found one.

I was wondering what everyone's thoughts are on a 2001 LS Silverado Z71 with 95k miles. I have never owned a Silverado I usually find that these types of forums are a good way to get opinions on vehicles.

Does anyone here own a 2001? What are some common compliants (if any)? Anything I should look out for if when inspecting the truck? Any well-known common problems?

Thanks for the input

I was not even aware that you could get a stick-shift on a V8 Silverado. I thought they only offered them on the base 'work truck' model with the regular cab & V6 engine.

I have a 2004 Silverado with 120k (5.3L, 2wd, Z85, auto trans) and it runs great. A good friend of mine has a 2002 (same front end as the 2001) with 210,000+ miles on the original engine & transmission.

Maintenance is the proper key to a long life, but these trucks are built fairly well. I think a five-speed would be kind of cool.....and probably quite rare.

I have a 2000 4.8L 5spd that is still running like new after 351 000km. Some might have piston slap...a slight knock when cold that goes away when warm.
Mine is trouble free after fixing the usual things on a truck that old....axle seals, oil pan gaskets, water pump gaskets, abs sensors, intake gaskets,
2000-2006 has been a good generation much better that the 2007 to 2013's

Default 2001 Silverado - Issues I've had/seen.

Major issues/repeat issues:

1) Rust! Rotted rocker panels, rot around the wheel wells & rot on the rear bumper to the extent that one side sags. I've seen this rust/rot on other Silverados of this body style. Get under the truck and push on the rocker panels to see if they feel "mushy". The rear shackles even rotted out and had to be replaced. Don't ignore any rust you see, it'll probably get worse.

2) Window regulators. I've had to change the regulator on the driver's side twice and the passenger once. If the truck you're looking at has electric windows, roll them down and then up. If it sounds like the windows are struggling to roll back up, the regulators may be close to failing.

Other stuff:

I had to replace the 2WD/4WD selector switch.

Replaced the alternator twice.

Replaced both front wheel bearings (At approx 180,000 miles, truck currently has 200,000 miles on it).

The "Check Engine" light is currently on and my mechanic can't seem to fix.

That's all I can think of without getting a repair history from my mechanic.

Hope this helps.

maybe you should start a thread. I bet we can fix it here.

I do agree with your post. rust if you live in the rust belt. Most std trans will have a manual shift tcase.

Thankfully, I live in Virginia -- where rust is really not a problem. We have cars that are twenty years old that still don't yet have body rot on them.
