Default 2004 silverado steering clunk (again)

You Guy's are probably tired of this thread already but here it goes,
Just bought an 04 silverado 4x4, 49000 miles. really sharp & clean truck.
first chevy in awhile after a brief moment with toyot'as & fords....
well low & behold after having it only a week, the steering wheel clunk under the dash is getting worse..I reserched this for a few days and it's seems like hundreds of people are complaing about this same problem and it is the steering arm. everyone says just re-pack it with grease and the problem goes away for a month or two.
well, I dont want it to go away just for a month or two, I want rid of it completely ! Apparently chevy will not re-call this saying it's just an annoyance noise. I wonder if I annoy them without a payment we can call it even !
anyway, Is there a permanant fix for this clunking ? if so how much extra will this cost me ? after being a chevyman all my life and straying away and buying a ford f-150 & then a toyota tacoma I kinda felt obligated to go back to Chevy, now this..
any help would be appriciated alot.
Craig

it is called intermediate steering shaft
replacement is about 10 minutes.
buy a NAPA model, it is said to be the best.
DO NOT BUY OEM MODEL.
GM has "participation" program for those, for up to 70K miles. they prorate the part and you pay labor. be better off swapping it yourself and with aftermarket one.

maybe, you should have stayed with Toyotas? wait for other clunks to follow suite..... slip yoke, then hub bearings go bad, then, if you have one, idler arm goes bad... window regulators... t-case switch.. not the question IF, question - WHEN.

those trucks are fun, as far as you are really into continuous repairs...

I hope your not talking about waiting for other "clunks" to follow on this chevy.
never had any problems with my toyota, only reason i got rid of it was because of the room, ( None).
had some issues with the ford ( besides 8 MPG.) wasnt really that bad.
this is my 7th chevy truck. first one to have anything like this happen.
thanks for the info,
Craig

The dealer shaft has been updated. The original TSB was to lube the shaft but the new bulletin says to replace it. All the ones I have replaced have stayed fixed so far ( however not that I talk about it they will all probably come back next week, HA HA that how it work in the repair business). The napa part probably came from the same manufacture as the dealer part. If you post the napa part number I will look at it and tell you if it is what you need.
