Have a 2001 Silverado 1500 4x4 with electronic shift. Had problems with 4x4 and ABS when I bought it. I first checked all grounds especially the one under drivers door on frame rail support. Next without the 2k reader from chevy to check codes I replaced the switch, ( chinese crap) didn't work keeped old one installed. Next changed the transfer control motor that is mounted on the tx case. After 3 chinese crap went to a rebuilt and for a short period it worked. Finally I replaced the tx control module located behind the instrument panel left side. Found a used one on E-bay. System has worked for the last 2 years. So my thought is that the module was at fault all along. As for the ABS it was the module located on top of ABS un it on driver side frame. Had to remove whole ABS unit to get to module, sent to a rebuild company back east and it has worked ever since. Good Luck and hope this post may help you

Does it shift or try to shift, can you hear any noise when try to shift? If not, replace the switch, anything not working in the 4x4 will give that service light. I had a switch go bad on my 2000 suburban. Shift solenoids are a known problem.
