Default Power steering Troubles

New to forum. And will say ahead of time any and all help is appreciated. Started having problems periodically minor stiffness steering at low speed. Buddy said you need to change pump before you break shaft. Ok so I replaced pump, now worse totally no steering if I lift weight off tires no problem. Spins like a top. With weight on no turn what so ever. So I changed gear case same thing. Oh on the pump just for stuff and giggles I changed the first one just in case the first replacement was bad. Now at a loss and patience. Truck is a 98' Silverado w/ 114000 mi. well taken care of miles. Oh and changed hoses.
And again any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the forum...
I believe your year model should have the speed sensitive steering...
there is a sensor that attaches to the steering column that detects the wheels position... it gives you more power steering at lower speeds i.e. parking lots and less at highway speeds....
