Default ajar

ajar is such a funny word. my grandfather's caddy would actually shout out at 100db "THE DOOR IS AJAR"

which to any kid means you visualize a pickle jar duct taped to the stupid car where the door used to be.

When you open the door, it should have a small pushpin near the dash side of the door. at least my 1995 did.

when you push it in, it tells the computer (or GMs version of a computer aka etch-a-sketch) that the door is closed.

the one on my 95 failed as well, but the other way.

If you reach in behind it, it should pop out so you can clean/replace it.

if the design is different in yours look for something that gets pressed when the door closes... I'd wager theoretical dollars that's the issue.
