key stuck in ignition and won't turn back to lock position ( help )
Hello everyone I just joined up on here . I have a 2002 trailblazer LS . I recently had a transmission malfunction and it needed to be replaced because I lost the use of all gears and basically it wouldn't drive anymore . Right before the transmission totally stopped working on the same evening I stopped at a gas station and wasn't able to turn the key to the lock position and remove the key fromthe ignition . I had the transmission replaced by a credible certified transmission specialist and the new transmission works perfectly but I'm still not able to remove the key . He readjusted the linkages but said that the problem is not showing in anything in the direct involvment with the transmission , He did give me a 2 year warranty on this transmission and his work so if it proves to be the cause of the problem I can approach him about it . There was no trama or impact from a crash anywhere on the vehicle as it had just with no indication on a back road just creeped to a halt and stopped . This truck has just reached 60,000 miles and had a transmission fluid and filter change at 40,000 ( I'm guessing that may have been a little early but I wanted it done ) . I didn't end up continuing with the extended warranty so I ate the cost of the replacement transmission but I still would like to know if there's any kind of code reset or bypass that needs to be done to be able to remove my key from the ignition ? I currently have to open the hood and remove a battery cable wire to not drain my battery when I'm not driving the truck being that it's not able to go further back than the acc position , and that's going to become a hassle .
I'd really appreciate any info. that someone may be able to give me .

Have you checked the lock cylinder or the ignition switch? Either of those can causewhat you are describing. It seems that you are focusing on the transmission going out as beingrelated to the problem, and it may be that the transmission problemwas just a coincidence.

on some of the trailblazers. under the steering wheel, the plastic cover has a hole or a hole with a cap on it.
you can put a screwdriver in and release the key.

I had this problem just the other day on my '02 LTZ when I had a completely dead battery. Left the dome light on over the weekend, put the key in Monday morning and nothing. Tried to take the key out and couldn't do it. Got a jumpstart to get him started again and the key could come out again. Not sure if its related? Loss of power to the key area perhaps?
(And whats with the Battery Depletion Protection? Is that supposed to do anything or what? )

Key won't release from ignition lock position unless battery was disconnected and even when
the battery was disconnected, I could still shift gears after the key was removed. This was the problem I had in my 1996 Toyota Celica. The problem turned out to be the plastic Shift Lock plate. It's located within the console underneath the shifter. Great Advice!!!!! Thought i was gonna have to unhook the battery everytime I stopped. Any idea if this is an easy DIY fix or do I need to go to a mechanic?

Did you find out anything? I just replaced the carpet in my 2007 SS TB and in the middle of removing the carpet, I had to move the gear shifter. After removing the carpet, I put the gear shifter back to park. Now the ignition want go to the off position. I can start it and turn the engine off. I tried stating it, no problem. Tried turning it off with the brake depressed, & tried shifting from park to reverse. Neither of the two worked. Right now I'm going to check all my wiring harnesses & verify their connection. Any Help Would be greatly appreciated!
