Chevrolet Silverado 1999-2006: How to Clean or Replace Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF)

Here's how to clean or replace your Silverado's mass air flow (MAF) sensor, and ensure the engine is metering air as it should.

This article applies to the Chevrolet Silverado GMT800 (1999-2006).

The mass air flow (MAF) sensor in your truck plays a vital roll in the operation of its engine. Essentially, this sensor measures the amount of air entering the engine to determine how much fuel to deliver. Even though air entering the engine passes through the air filter before reaching the MAF sensor, it can still become dirty over time or even fail completely. So if you notice the engine dragging, hesitating, and/or stalling after it starts, the MAF sensor is a likely culprit to address. Continue reading as the instructions below are the steps on how to clean or replace the MAF sensor in your Chevy Silverado.

Materials Needed

  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Mass air flow sensor cleaner
  • Shop rags

Step 1 – Locate and disconnect the MAF sensor

The MAF sensor is located between the air filter housing and air inlet hose. On top of the sensor, you can see a harness connector situated next to the sensor module. To detach the connector, push down on the tabs and pull it straight out.

Pro Tip

The harness connector and tabs may become brittle over time. Take extra precaution not to break the connector or it will not properly reattach.

Step 2 – Remove the MAF sensor

There are two hose clamps on each side of the MAF sensor that hold it in place. Use a flat head screwdriver to loosen the hose clamp screws. Pull the air inlet hose off the sensor, and then pull the sensor off of the air filter housing.

Step 3 – Clean or replace MAF sensor

Once the MAF sensor has been removed, take extra care not to touch or damage its sensor element inside. If you're cleaning the sensor, this element is the part that should be cleaned. Simply spray the inside of the sensor, let the cleaner sit for a few seconds, and wipe off any excess cleaner on the inner and outer edges. To re-install the cleaned or new MAF sensor, attach it to the air filter housing and air inlet hose. Then, tighten the hose clamps and plug in the harness connector.

Pro Tip

After cleaning or installation, start your vehicle and let the engine idle for at least five minutes. This will allow the on-board computer to recognize any changes, and make necessary calibrations. It's also a good idea to go on a short test drive as well.
