Chevrolet Silverado 2014-Present: Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins

Recalls and TSBs are Chevrolet Silverado's way of saying, "We did something wrong, let us fix it." Learn about which ones might be affecting your Silverado 1500.

By Peter Sessler - June 3, 2015

This article applies to the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (2014-present).

There are two kinds of recalls that can affect your Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The first type covers a safety-related defect that is determined by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This is known as a Mandatory Recall. Obviously, this is serious. A Voluntary Recall covers issues other than safety defects. Either way, the manufacturer has to pay for all costs related to the recall.

Recalls

Engine Cylinder Deactivation

Certain 2014 Silverado 1500 models are being recalled due to increased fire risk associated with their cylinder deactivation systems. This is the Active Fuel Management system which shuts off some cylinders when there is less demand for fuel, and it does improve fuel economy. This cylinder shut-off system was originally used by Cadillac in the early 1980s. A software malfunction is causing the engine to idle with most of their cylinders, instead of just four. This can overheat the exhaust system and potentially catch fire.

Fuel System / Gasoline Delivery / Fuel Pump

  • Date Reported - January 01, 2014
  • NHTSA Reference - #10054993
  • TSB Reference - #RB-13370-A

GMC/Chevrolet had an incorrect fuel pump pressure regulator at time of production and the malfunction indicator lamp will illuminate. The vehicle will have a hard start condition and the engine will stumble and/or stall out. As the fuel pump is located inside the gas tank, it will require the tank to be removed from the vehicle and then the necessary part replaced.

Equipment: Electrical / Navigational System (Global Positioning System)

  • Date Reported - December 01, 2014
  • NHTSA Reference #10055421
  • TSB Reference #PI-1126-B

Some vehicles may experience a blank screen after startup and reverse. The rearview camera message may go on and the touch screen becomes inoperative. The Bluetooth and navigation may be malfunctioning. Typically, the whole navigation and software system are replaced as a unit as fixing the stock unit may be beyond the dealership technicians.

Scheduled Maintenance

Following the owner's manual on scheduled maintenance can make the difference between a Silverado that lasts 25,000 miles and one that lasts 300,000 miles (or more). It is something you can do yourself and only requires simple hand tools. Your owner's manual has all the information you need, but generally, scheduled maintenance covers the following:

Common Questions

What about the current air bag recall, the biggest recall ever?

Takata, the Japanese air bag manufacturer, has agreed to fix the problem, according to NHTSA rules. High humidity has been linked to degradation of the propellant used in the air bag and increasing the risk that air bags may rupture and shoot fragments at people in the vehicle.

62 million vehicles were recalled in 2014. What's going on?

Well, someone was sleeping at the wheel, and these are all problems that just don't go away. Some manufacturers tried to hide the problems, too. But there is a bright side: the cars are getting better.

Common Issues

A/C Problems

Whether it's a condenser or a compressor, GM is experiencing problems with the A/C system on the 2014 Silverado. Tied in with this is the lack of understanding of some dealer's service departments. On the other hand, there are Chevrolet Customer Service reps on various blogs and they are doing their best getting the problems fixed.

Bad Vibration

There are quite a few owners who have/had a vibration from 55-75 MPH, whether it was tires, wheels, driveshaft, axles, etc. It is a serious problem that just doesn't have a set remedy. It just creates negative feelings.

Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs)

A bulletin, also referred to as a Technical Service Bulletin or TSB, is a general advisory issued to the customer by the manufacturer. If the manufacturer is made aware of a common or recurring default, they may issue a bulletin with detailed instructions on ways to avoid or solve the problem. Unlike recalls, these bulletins may not necessarily pertain specifically to safety issues. Bulletins discuss a wide variety of possible and common complications.
