Prepare to Be Wowed: 2020 Corvette Convertible Debuts Oct. 2
Newest addition to Corvette family to blast-off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and Chevrolet Forum will be there.
Every day that passes by is another day closer to when the C8 era of the Corvette will finally roll out of Bowling Green and into the driveways of the owners lucky enough to be first to pilot the mid-engined dream machine. Until then, we’ll simply have to bide our time with things like college football, hay bale rides, and Black Friday.
Of course, if you’ve been waiting to see the convertible version of the new Corvette in person, that day, too, is on the horizon. In fact, we at Chevrolet Forum will be making a trip to the Kennedy Space Center near the coast of Cape Canaveral, Florida to bear witness to the debut of the newest edition to the C8 family on October 2.
Convertibles, Corvettes, and space have gone hand in hand since the Fifties in one way or another. The first generation ‘Vettes were available only as convertibles, and there’s been a convertible available through to the present.
And of course, America’s sports car fits in quite well with the brave souls who would scale the heavens to touch the Moon. Thus, it’s only appropriate to continue the space theme established by the targa-topped C8 launched July 18 in Los Angeles.
There’s not much information about the new Corvette convertible, though. Our friends at Corvette Forum recently rendered what the car would look like, featuring a pair of flying buttresses containing the mechanisms needed to raise and lower the soft top, depending on what the weather is like.
According to Car Buzz, the new Corvette convertible will also weigh 102 pounds more than the targa model, likely due to all of the things to make a convertible viable in the first place. They also have spy shots of the real deal with its top up, hiding the flying buttresses from prying lenses.
Beyond the folding top and extra weight, though, it appears everything else will be the same where it counts: a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter LT2 V8 driving the rears via an eight-speed dual-clutch. We’ll all know more soon enough.
